It has been observed that the Vandegrift family name, americanized from the Dutch, during the New Amsterdam/NY/PA/DE time period, has been found in different references, variously spelled: Vandegrift, Van de Grift, Van de Grist, Vandergrift, etc.
It should be noted that with few exceptions, the surname spelled "Vandegrift" has been verified by signatures from Jacob Leendertsen vande Grift to the writer: Peter Vandegrift, as of 21 Jun 1997.

Notes: Ambrose London bought a plantation at Gravesend, Long Island New Amsterdam in 1641. 1653 he petitioned burgomasters for a pass to go to Virginia. By 1659 he was living in Northampton Co. VA. In 1663/4 he was presented to the court for a Quaker and heavily fined. By 1665 he and wife and children Mary, Ruth, and Abigail had moved to Somerset Co. MD, probably because Maryland tolerated all religions. He settled at Annemessix and became a substantial citizen and planter. He was a major, a justice of the peace, and was elected to the elected to the Lower House of the General Assembly.
