Shuart Family of Ontario

The Shuart family of Ontario has been very difficult to put together. It has so far been impossible to link it with certainty to the Dutch line descended from Soert Olferts from Heerenvan, Frisnian, Netherlands who settled in New Netherland (New York) in the mid 1660s, but it seems almost certain the Ontario Shuarts descend from this family.

Sioert Olfertszen "de metselaer" (the stone mason) came to New Netherland from Heerenveen, Friesland, in 1663 on the ship Statyn with his wife Ytie Roelofs. With them was their young son -- Olfert Soert -- born about 1661 in the Netherlands. On 27 January 1664 their daughter Maryken was baptized in the New Amsterdam Dutch Church. Soert died 05 Oct 1702 in New York City, having married three times. Soert Olferts' wives were:
  1. Ytjie Roelofs by whom he had one known son (and one daughter) Olphert Soertszen from whom all Shuart families descend.
  2. Heyltie Pieters widow of widow of Cornelis Clopper, born in Amsterdam, married Soert 26 Sep 1697 in New Amsterdam New York Reformed Dutch Church - no known children
  3. Jannetje Jans Snediker, married Soert 10 Nov 1701 in New York City - no known children
My own Shuart ancestor was Elizabeth Shuart married James Jamieson. Other Shuart individuals found in Ontario (Upper Canada also Canada West) were probably siblings of my Elizabeth, but to date no absolute proof has been found. They may all have been children of Henry Shuart and wife Rachel De Graw but we have not found proof of this theory.
